Nicole Lieberman (left) and Liza van der Smissen (right) first met seven years ago at the BFI Film Festival and quickly discovered they lived just one street apart in London—an uncommon coincidence in such a large city! After one coffee, they decided to join forces on a short film, and their collaboration took off with Neext!—a project shot with 80% of the crew being women. This first venture revealed just how well they complement each other, with their differences strengthening their partnership and shared values driving their success.
As the pandemic happened in 2020, Nicole and Liza felt a deep need to stay connected with filmmakers despite the industry's shutdown. This led them to create the Female Film Club in August 2020— a transformative members club, reshaping the landscape for filmmakers globally, whilst empowering members throughout their film career. This allows them to discover their community, whilst becoming part of a global movement that is amplifying the female voice.
Nicole has a background in human rights, believing in the power of film to change perceptions and make a tangible impact on the world. She has produced an award-winning feature and short films, and as an NLP Master Practitioner, she empowers women in the film industry by using storytelling and mindset coaching to align personal and professional goals. This helps them believe in their own power and create their vision, telling the stories they believe in.
Liza started her career as a dancer and actor, later founding her own production company. With a wealth of experience working with talents like Anna Paquin and Ray Winstone, Liza’s passion for feminist film theory and advocacy for underrepresented voices drives her work. As an NLP practitioner, she focuses on fostering inclusivity and innovation in storytelling, helping filmmakers embrace their full creative potential.
Together, they are on a mission to unite filmmakers worldwide. While they don’t claim to have all the answers, they know that progress is best achieved together.
The Female Film Club stands as a testament to their belief: Our voice matters—let's make it heard.
