Screenwriters Toolkit Course

REGISTRATION now open till 30th March only.

(10 spots left!)

When: September 4th - November 6th
Frequency: Every Monday 1,5 hours
Time: 6.30-8.00 PM BST (UK TIME)

A 10-week course on Mondays led by Dr Tracy Mathewson to equip and engage you with the narrative tools needed to turn your inspiration into a working screen story. Each week we will take a deep dive into a new aspect of storytelling.

Throughout the course you will be guided on the development of your own screen story, culminating in a private showcase where each student can have a selection from their work read by actors.

We get it

You've got inspiration, an idea, but you can't seem to finish your script (or start it!)

After running the Female Film Club for 3 years we kept seeing the same problems with many of our members:

  • Do you call yourself an 'aspiring writer'? You write, but not fulltime, so you don't feel like a 'writer'. You might feel like an outsider of the industry and this belief keeps you from taking your craft seriously.
  • Your script lacks something, but you're not sure what exactly. Maybe structure? Formatting? Or is it character development? You google some solutions but different websites say different things and it's hard to know which one to follow and what applies to your script specifically.
  • You don't have a trusted person or peer group to guide you through the process and feelings of frustration, which makes finishing your script almost impossible.
  • In order to get your script ready to be send off you ask for advice. But from who? Your neigbour and mother might tell you how much they love (or hate!) your protagonist but how is this helping your script progress and get it up to industry standards?
  • You're keen to get your script commissioned, but lack the building blocks and master the language of screen to get taken seriously. Industry professionals won't read further than your first page if the formatting is not correct. Your story and script can be so wonderful but without knowing the details and the correct technicalities your script won't get far.

We saw our members struggling with some or all of these problems and we were keen to find a solution as we knew they had stories that need to be told!!

Then we met Dr. Tracy..

Dr. Tracy Mathewson became a FFC member in 2021 and soon we realised the wealth of knowledge and expertise she has when it comes to screenwriting;

Not only does she hold an MA and PhD in screenwriting, is teaching at top universities in London, she is also a writer, director and script consultant. (and she rises a kickass motor!) Her knowledge spans from academia to the practicalities of filmmaking. She teaches with empathy, understanding and a big dose of tough love. Under the guidance of Dr. Tracy students have gotten their scripts commissioned, finished and are now proud to call themselves a writer.

Dr. Tracy is part of the FFC Family and we are so excited to let you know that the doors to her new writing courses are opening soon.

Join our open event on 14th March (UK time) to get to know Dr. Tracy and ask all your burning scriptwriting questions.

'These are brilliantly crafted and organised courses that are thorough but not too taxing that I couldn’t do it alongside all my other life commitments.

I feel I have come out of it with a fundamental understanding of screenwriting and I have now finished my screenplay and am ready to get it produced.

If you have to miss more than 2 sessions we would not recommend joining this round.

This course is for advanced writers who are familiar with the writing process and have written screenplays before (short or features). If you are familiar with the format of a screenplay and are willing to put in the work you will be able to keep up with this course.

If you have not written any screenplays before we have a beginner course: The Art Of The Screenplay in March 2023 which will be better suited for you.

YES! There will be a maximum of 15 people taking this course to ensure personal feedback and questions will be answered. Workshopping and getting feedback on your script is an important part of this course.

But...

Please reach us at info@femalefilmclub.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Unless you've done an MA or PhD or got many feature films made this course will be useful for you. 'Essential for any writer' - Judith Jung

Yes, you'll definitely will be challenged and we encourage you to start with the Art Of The Screenplay Course. You can ask any question and bring examples of your own work/idea's to every course.

3x 1,5hour online sessions on Mondays, from wherever you call home.

Yes, we have writers that started off with Tracys courses and were not active in the industry before. Thanks to the course they have now created a great peer group in the industry and feel connected and part of it.

Yes, the rules and language are the same, in the Toolkit 10 week course Tracy adds things for students who want to write TV series.

The Art of the Screenplay will give you all the tools you need to write a feature film. You can use the same rules if you want to write a short film or TV series that is taken seriously by the industry.

Yes, often a major objection to starting to write is not knowing the structure and language, once you know that, the writing will be a lot easier to get started!

If you only miss one session of The Art Of the Screenplay that is fine, you will be able to do your homework and catch up, if you miss more then one session then this course is not for you.

If you are going for the Essential or Ultimate packages then we advise you to be at least 8 Mondays available between September and November.

The best time to write your script was 5 years ago. The second best time is now.
