Let's get writing

The doors are now open

You can now enter the Art Of The Screenplay in the FFC

We get it

You've got inspiration, an idea, but you can't seem to finish your script (or start it!)

After running the Female Film Club for 3 years we kept seeing the same problems with many of our members:

  • Do you call yourself an 'aspiring writer'? You write, but not fulltime, so you don't feel like a 'writer'. You might feel like an outsider of the industry and this belief keeps you from taking your craft seriously.
  • Your script lacks something, but you're not sure what exactly. Maybe structure? Formatting? Or is it character development? You google some solutions but different websites say different things and it's hard to know which one to follow and what applies to your script specifically.
  • You don't have a trusted person or peer group to guide you through the process and feelings of frustration, which makes finishing your script almost impossible.
  • In order to get your script ready to be send off you ask for advice. But from who? Your neighbor and mother might tell you how much they love (or hate!) your protagonist but how is this helping your script progress and get it up to industry standards?
  • You're keen to get your script commissioned, but lack the building blocks and master the language of screen to get taken seriously. Industry professionals won't read further than your first page if the formatting is not correct. Your story and script can be so wonderful but without knowing the details and the correct technicalities your script won't get far.

We saw our members struggling with some or all of these problems and we were keen to find a solution as we knew they had stories that need to be told!!

Then we met Dr. Tracy...

Dr. Tracy Mathewson became a FFC member in 2021 and soon we realised the wealth of knowledge and expertise she has when it comes to screenwriting;

Not only does she hold an MA and PhD in screenwriting, is teaching at top universities in London, she is also a writer, director and script consultant. (and she rises a kickass motor!)

Dr Tracy Mathewson is a writer, director and script consultant whose screenwriting (features and pilots) has consistently earned her finalist and semi-finalist rankings in screenwriting contests and fellowships, including being among the top 15% of the Academy Nicholl Fellowship competition.

She has written, script-edited and directed multiple award winning shorts and has spent the last year working alongside 2-time Oscar Winner Chloé Zhao on her latest feature HAMNET, starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal.

Tracy received her MA in screenwriting over 10 years ago and it was learning screenwriting the hard way on her MA that influenced her own method of teaching screenwriting and developing screenplays today.

Alongside her work as a filmmaker and with the FFC, Tracy also lectures in Fiction Film Production at UCL.

'These are brilliantly crafted and organised courses that are thorough but not too taxing that I couldn’t do it alongside all my other life commitments.

I feel I have come out of it with a fundamental understanding of screenwriting and I have now finished my screenplay and am ready to get it produced.

'Essential for writers! If you need a structure to build your 'house', this is the course for you. I like the fact that they offer the toolkit because we can go independent later on with our film projects. Liza and Nicole is super cheerful and supportive, Tracy is an amazing tutor and classmates, they're not only classmates but a supportive community who want to connect and help each other out :)'

'The Screenwriter's Toolkit and Art Of The Screenplay are the perfect introduction to storytelling for screenwriters – it takes a somewhat daunting genre and makes it both accessible and fun! The courses really boosted my confidence and gave me all the necessary tools to further improve my writing. Highly recommended!'

All writers courses are online

Yes that's correct;

You don't have to enroll into a £10k per year university in London, leave the house for classes, arrange and pay a baby sitter or miss cuddles with your dog to level up your screenwriting. All our previous students had busy lives and other life commitments, our courses are designed to fit around a busy lifestyle so you don't have to choose.

Online classes are 1,5hour on Mondays and you can join from anywhere you call home and will be joined by a community of likeminded international women.

Art of the screenplay course

Master the mechanics & discover the artistry in one of the most disciplined creative writing mediums

You'll feel confident and secure in your screenwriting submitting your script to producers.

We noticed that there is such a need for learning the proper rules around screenwriting that the FFC and Dr. Tracy Mathewson made a 3 week course around it. So you'll be guided not only on how to correctly format your screen-story, but also on what makes screenwriting different to playwriting and other creative writing mediums, and how to master the form artfully.

In this online course you'll learn:

  • Screenplay formatting: everything from scene headings, parentheticals, to courier font and white space, why screenplays look the way they do.
  • What makes screenwriting so different from any other creative writing medium.
  • Markers of advanced screenwriting: visual writing, brevity, clarity, and confidence.
  • Why screenwriting is the way it is.
  • The rules of screenwriting.
  • How to apply the rules of screenwriting.
  • How/when to break the rules of screenwriting.

In the FFC we believe that it’s easier to reach excellence with a supportive community behind you. In this course you will be guided through the Art of Screenplay with other creatives just like you, where you will be able to get accountability for your progress and work. You’ll have access to a platform together with other students and can share all kinds of idea’s, ask questions and be accountable to each other.

This course is for you if:

● You want to embark on a new creative journey this year and start writing your first script.

● You have written short stories, novels, or plays and now want to make the move into screenwriting.

● Screenwriting format seem daunting and inaccessible and you want to simplify it.

● You are unsure of what they mean when they say a screenplay is a 'blueprint for a movie’.

● You feel inspired and have a great story or idea for a script but simply do not know how to get it off the ground yet.

● You’ve written your first script and feel you need more help with structure.

● You want to start transitioning from writing your short to a feature.

Yes, the rules and language are the same, in the Toolkit 10 week course Tracy adds things for students who want to write TV series.

The Art of the Screenplay will give you all the tools you need to write a feature film. You can use the same rules if you want to write a short film or TV series that is taken seriously by the industry.

Yes, often a major objection to starting to write is not knowing the structure and language, once you know that, the writing will be a lot easier to get started!
